Are you scheduled for a root canal? You’re probably worried. You may think that root canals are extremely painful. Our team at Williamsville Family Dentistry goes above and beyond to make sure you’re as comfortable as possible. Here’s what you can expect from the root canal procedure.
Before the Root Canal
Root canal therapy is a procedure that is done to preserve a tooth that’s already “dead”; essentially, we are taking out the infected pulp and preserving the outside of the tooth. The root canal is done to save the crown of the tooth so you don’t have to get a more expensive dental crown. If the tooth itself is damaged, a root canal plus a dental crown will be needed. If you simply extract the tooth, then a replacement like a dental implant or denture will be the best thing to prevent drifting or shifting of your teeth. Overall, a standard root canal is the best way to preserve your tooth!
What Is the Procedure Like?
During the procedure, you’ll be in the dental chair for a while as we remove the inflamed or infected part of the tooth pulp. We do everything we can to make you completely comfortable during this procedure. With local anesthesia, we can ensure you don’t feel anything as the tooth and the surrounding areas will be numb. We completely sterilize the tooth after removing the dead pulp tissue, and once this along with the nerves are removed, the tooth itself actually cannot feel pain anymore!
Finishing the Root Canal
A filling or a crown is used to completely restore your tooth. In the end, a root canal is the best step you can take to save the integrity of your tooth. We know root canals get a bad reputation, but really the pain often associated with root canals is the infection itself, not the procedure.
